What causes warts to grow on the extremities?

All types of skin warts are caused by a virus which can be found virtually everywhere; nearly everyone will come in contact with it at some time. Doctors are not yet sure why some people are affected, while others never develop any symptoms, but about fifty percent of individuals who are exposed to the virus will eventually develop warts on their skin.

Is it necessary to remove warts from the skin?

Warts are benign, which means they are not linked to cancer. In most cases, people choose to have them removed for cosmetic reasons. Often, if warts are left alone, they will clear up on their own; however, it can take years for warts to heal without treatment.

How does tape occlusion really work?

There is some evidence to suggest that the adhesive can help to destroy a wart and cause it to pull away from the skin. To use duct tape occlusion (a fancy term for applying tape to warts), cover up the warts with tape. After six days, the tape should be removed and the area soaked in water for several minutes. Debride the wart with an emery board, and then leave it uncovered for twelve hours. Afterward, cover it with duct tape again; repeat this process until the wart pulls away from the skin.

Is removing warts with duct tape really safe and effective?

Although you can get rid of warts using duct tape, the process can take several months, and duct tape does not prevent the warts from growing back. For people with sensitive skin, or for those who are allergic to the chemicals in the adhesive, duct tape occlusion can cause severe irritation and skin damage.
