I thought there was something a little forced about the big cheesy grin on Eliza’s face as her instructor detached her from the parascender. My daughter had just floated 3,000ft down from mountain tops looming around Lake Annecy — and that was a bit of one-upmanship no eight-year-old could resist.

“You’d have loved it Tim. That was the best thing ever. I wasn’t scared at all,” she told her brother, 12, several times as I shooed her off the landing site and away from the risk of the dozen of other tourists being whirled down from the heights above by other instructors.
